Specialist fabrication business, Storplan, has announced the appointment of a new general manager to drive its growth. The new hire follows Storplan’s recent acquisition by leading offsite manufacturer, Thurston Group.

Steve Smith joins Storplan with a wealth of experience in managing large logistics and warehouse operations. He most recently spent almost four years at a leading distribution firm where he oversaw 500+ staff and was responsible for distribution, warehousing, fulfilment, and logistics strategy, supporting a half a billion-pound annual revenue.

Smith will use his proven expertise in driving improvements in financials, productivity, and SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality) to head up a team of 20 at Storplan’s York manufacturing site, working closely with Thurston Group’s production director, Dan Pollard.

His goal is to see the company reach its potential and improve EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) profits by embracing significant opportunities across the racking and mezzanine side of the businesses and optimising warehouse space amid rising capacity costs.

Thurston Group is based in Wakefield, with three further sites in the east of England, including Storplan’s 1,900 sqm manufacturing facility in York.

Earlier this year, Thurston Group officially acquired Storplan, enabling the Group to take on more complex modular construction projects, larger structural steel works, and specialist jobs such as warehouse racking and bespoke building fabrications.

Speaking about joining, Steve Smith said: “We have ambitious growth targets to hit, and my role will be focused on leading the Storplan team in delivering on these and driving the business forward. I’ll be getting stuck in and working closely with Thurston Group MD, Matt Goff, and production director, Dan Pollard, alongside the wider team to help Storplan reach its enormous growth potential and contribute to the overall Group’s success and vision.”

Thurston Group’s production director, Dan Pollard, added: “With Steve’s energy and expertise in the mix, there are exciting times ahead for Storplan, and I’m confident we’ll continue to drive real progress, innovation, and positive change as we embrace new opportunities in the distribution and logistics sector.”

Storplan was established in 2000 and has developed a reputation as a leading specialist fabricator and supplier of mezzanine floors, racking and partitioning for retail and industrial storage across the UK.

Thurston Group is one of the UK’s largest designers and manufacturers of portable and modular buildings, employing circa 377 people across its four sites in the East of England.
