On 25th September Lush Manufacturing hosted 150 school children and students at their Poole Green Hub, for their annual celebration of Make UK’s National Manufacturing Day. Lush, the inventors of the bath bomb, have been manufacturing in Poole since 1995, and focus on local employment and progression in their manufacturing business.

National Manufacturing Day is an opportunity for businesses across the country to open their doors and celebrate the careers, skills and expertise in the Manufacturing sector. On the day students were invited to get hands-on, making their own products, learning about the breadth of careers in the manufacturing industry, and touring Lush’s Green Hub facility – focusing on waste, recycling and the impact businesses can have on the local environment.

“Lush has been manufacturing fresh, handmade cosmetics in Poole for 30 years, and we are incredibly proud of our local area and community. National Manufacturing Day gives us the opportunity to highlight to young people the careers available on their doorstep, and to offer an insight into the excitement and opportunities in the manufacturing sector.” Elena Gronlund, Lush Manufacturing Learning and Development lead.

Students from local schools including Queen Elizabeth’s, Linwood School, St Edward’s and Magna Academy attended, as well as a cohort of local homeschooled children.

Julie Beaven, Design and Technology Technician at Magna Academy in Poole, said: “Our students really enjoyed the day and have taken away a lot of information to think about. The ethos of LUSH is a fantastic example of a sustainable future and we will be using the principles we learned as examples during lessons.  As usual the day was very well organised and we are very grateful to have had the opportunity for our students to attend” – Julie Beaven, Magna Academy

Lush Manufacturing employs over 880 permanent staff all year around in the UK, with their workforce more than doubling over the festive season. Using intricate handmade techniques and fresh ethically sourced ingredients Lush Manufacturing produces over 33 million products in the UK each year, including 11.5 million world famous bath bombs.
