BEAMA – the trade association representing manufacturers of electrical products spearheading the drive to electrification – a sector valued at £14bn – is calling upon the UK Government to work with manufacturers and the wider supply chain to grow the UK market to deliver more joined up strategy for decarbonising UK energy, heating and transport infrastructure, providing greater certainty for industry to unlock sustained economic growth and high skilled employment, while boosting efficiency and driving down the cost of UK decarbonisation.
At a parliamentary reception this week, hosted by Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the Energy, Security and Net Zero Committee, BEAMA relaunched the Smart Buildings Group with the publication of a Smart Energy Explainer, which provides policymakers and MPs with an updated primer on the range of smart energy technologies available to accelerate decarbonisation of the UK economy.
The Smart Building Group (SBG) is an industry forum within BEAMA, representing UK manufacturers of Smart Energy Appliances, including EV charging equipment, the full range of electric heat and water products, and smart home energy management systems.
The SBG unites these innovators to deliver connected, energy-efficient, and decarbonised homes, supporting the UK’s Clean Power 2030 and Net Zero 2050 goals.
The event brought together manufacturers from the different strands of heat decarbonisation and smart innovation across the UK to showcase the latest smart technologies helping to drive the clean energy transition.
The updated explainer, ‘The smart energy supply chain: giving consumers access to clean power’, outlines the benefits for consumers and the wider energy system of delivering smart, flexible products.
To unlock the full potential of smart energy, BEAMA has called for the development of a joined-up delivery plan that brings energy, housing, industry, and consumer policy under one strategy for net zero homes. This will ensure that the multiple strands of government policies are tied up together.
The SGB group also recommended the creation of a standing industry-government forum including manufacturers, installers, and consumer groups, to troubleshoot policy gaps, share insights, and steer delivery.
Keynote speeches were provided by Swetta Coopamah, BEAMA’s Head of Smart Energy Systems, Yselkla Farmer, CEO of BEAMA, Bill Esterson MP, Chair of the ESNZ Committee, Duncan Stone, Deputy Director Smart Electricity Systems, and Pete Noyce, Policy Manager, and Dr Andrew Molineux, Director of Engineering & Integrations, at Mercury Consortium (Kraken).
The reception was sponsored by Mercury Consortium/Kraken, SMS Energy, LCP Delta, Secure Meters Limited, Mixergy, and Dimplex UK.
Yselkla Farmer, CEO of BEAMA, commented: “At every stage of the energy transition, the customer needs to be placed first. Smart energy is above all about empowering consumers with choice to make the most out of system flexibility This is the shared objective we should be working towards collaboratively across industry and government. At BEAMA, we are ready to support policymakers navigate the intertwinement of critical net zero policies.”
Swetta Coopamah, BEAMA’s Head of Smart Energy Systems, commented: “The relaunch of the Smart Building Group is a real cause for celebration. By bringing innovators across the supply chain together, this forum will help harmonise different strands of the energy transition into one coherent call to government to turbocharge growth in the smart energy market.”
Pete Armstrong, CEO at Mixergy, commented: “BEAMA is championing the future of connected living and change doesn’t happen in silos. Sponsoring this event reflects our belief in industry collaboration to scale smart, consumer-centric solutions.”
Spencer Clark, Commercial Managing Director at Dimplex commented: “In this ever-increasing dynamic world, energy security and maximising utilisation and storage is critical. Bringing industry, legislation, and innovation together is key to establish the UK’s Net Zero goals. To have BEAMA facilitating these initiatives is excellent”
Tom Wooley, Smart Product and Strategy Director at SMS commented: “SMS has been at the heart of the energy Industry for 30 years this year. We are proud to continue pushing boundaries and driving transition towards net zero. BEAMA support us in a complex policy landscape.”
